A gunman who indiscriminately opened fire on passing cars in Houston, striking three people, including a woman and her daughter, was shot by responding police officers, authorities said.
The shooting unfolded at about 11 a.m. local time when officers responded to reports of someone firing at cars along Wayside Drive. When they arrived, police found a man with a gun, the Houston Police Department said.
The officers commanded the man to drop the weapon. At some point, three officers and a trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety opened fire on the suspect.

The accused gunman was shot multiple times and taken to a hospital. No officers were injured.
"He was standing in the median right here," a witness told KRIV-TV. "He was just shooting at cars coming down Wayside. He didnât care who was coming which way. He didnât care who he was shooting at. He didnât care if there were kids in the car."
Among the targeted vehicles was a car carrying a mother and her daughter, both of whom were struck by gunfire, police said. A third person traveling in a second vehicle was also shot.

An occupant in a third vehicle managed to escape unharmed.
The witness, who identified himself only as David, said he and his coworkers tried to stop cars from driving toward the gunman.
The suspect has not been publicly identified, and a motive for the shooting has not been disclosed.
