Pirates add phenom Griffin, 19, for home opener

The Pittsburgh Pirates are calling up shortstop Konnor Griffin, the No. 1 prospect in baseball, ahead of Friday's home opener against the Baltimore Orioles, it was announced Thursday.

If he remains with the team the rest of the season, the Pirates are eligible to receive a draft pick through the Prospect Promotion Incentive.

Griffin, who turns 20 on April 24, was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2024 draft. Playing in the minors last year, the 6-foot-3, 222-pound shortstop batted .333 with a .941 OPS. He had some impressive moments in spring training this year, clubbing four homers in 16 games.

He started this season at Triple-A Indianapolis, where he has seven hits in his first 16 at-bats with three stolen bases.

Sources told ESPN's Buster Olney on Wednesday that the Pirates are deep into negotiations with Griffin on a long-term deal.
